Women’s Leadership Network regional networks

Eight regional network meetings have now taken place, with plans for second and third meetings in most regions. Planned regional activities include: local mentoring and work-shadowing opportunities, visiting speakers, local leadership training, CV and interview skills development, confidence-building and many others. Here’s a summary of recent and planned meetings with details of contacts for each region.

East of England – third meeting 28 April

Convened by Debbie Dear of ACER. A wide range of suggestions for the agreed three meetings a year including: regional network of coaches, speakers from other sectors, local leadership training to avoid travel, skills development for interviews, local or regional work-shadow opportunities and many others.

London and Surrey – second meeting planned for after Easter

Convened by Vicki Fagg, Principal of the College of North West London, and Sunaina Mann, Principal of NESCOT. Enthusiasm for future meetings and discussion of ideas included: central database of contacts, on-line forum for sharing ideas, invitation to governors of colleges, visiting speakers, opportunities to network informally.

North West – third meeting planned for summer term

Convened by Kathy Podmore, Principal of Birkenhead Sixth Form College. At the well attended 2nd meeting, there was renewed enthusiasm for future meetings, with suggestions including: sharing of good practice, mentoring and coaching, confident building, workshops led by current leaders, work shadowing.

South East (Thames Valley) – second meeting 30th March 17.30-19.30 at BCA

Convened by Pauline Odulinksi, Principal of Aylesbury College, this is the meeting postponed from January. A range of activities planned for this region.

South East (coastal counties) second meeting 22nd April in Brighton

Convened by Jan Edrich, AOSEC. At the first meeting, it was agreed that future meetings would be helpful - various activities discussed and it was agreed to check what other networks are doing.

West Midlands - second meeting planned

Convened by Dawn Ward, Principal of Burton College. At the first meeting, there was interest in a continued regional network, with activities such as mentoring and work shadowing on a regional basis developed through WLN.

Yorkshire and Humberside - second meeting planned

The first meeting was convened and hosted by Elaine McMahon, Principal of Hull College. There was enthusiasm for future meetings to take place, with a range of suggestions such as: support of principals, case studies, CV and interview skills development, mentorship including from outside sector.

Meetings also took place in the East Midlands and the North East, and a first meeting is planned in the South West. 

LSIS kindly funded meetings in regions with the lowest percentage of women principals (North East, East Midlands, East of England).
