02 Jan Women in senior roles: How are we doing? The state of play in the FE and Skills Sector
One of the Women’s Leadership Network (WLN)’s major objectives is to contribute to the closing of the gender gap at the most senior levels in the sector. The Network is the only national organisation to monitor the level of female representation at Principal / CEO level in FE colleges and has been tracking the gender balance since 2009.
We now have five years of data to demonstrate progress made by the FE and Skills sector in narrowing the gender gap at the top of the profession. In the FE sector, women outnumber men in all broad occupational groups except technical staff and senior managers and this provides a readily identified pool of talent, to be drawn on.
A significant proportion of the WLN’s activities concentrates on giving women that extra assurance and confidence that they are ready for a career move and on providing support, guidance and development activities to help them – and, indeed, convince them that the top jobs are worth having, even in these challenging times.
The good news is that the number of female principals/chief executives has increased steadily over the past five years.
