  WLN mentoring

Women’s Leadership Network mentoring

Research and members' feedback tell us that women value mentoring for career progression. Following our successful pilot, the WLN is again joining forces with the Black Leadership Initiative to offer career mentoring for women in our member organisations who aspire to the top jobs. The BLI has an extensive pool of experienced mentors, mainly senior managers and principals, poised to play their part.

Rajinder Mann OBE offers her views on the joint BLI/WLN mentoring opportunities:

"As Executive Director of the Black Leadership Initiative (BLI), the training and development service of the Network for Black Professionals, I am delighted to have this opportunity to write about mentoring – a subject very close to my heart.

I consider the most valuable benefits of mentoring are:

  • shared knowledge and expertise
  • raising aspirations
  • increased confidence and motivation
  • networking, and
  • capacity building

Originally the BLI flagship mentoring programme was designed for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff, but we have joined with the WLN to provide mentoring for all women leaders. Our framework uses coaching skills built around career progression to help individuals to identify their strengths and focus on areas for development.

I am also pleased to announce that the BLI has been successful in brokering Work Shadowing opportunities for BAME individuals to shadow ministers, senior civil servants, sector leaders and OFSTED inspectors. Such opportunities have been highly valued providing a range of benefits for participants."

Rajinder Mann OBE

Rajinder Mann, who was recently awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Honours List 2011, has over twenty five years experience in adult, youth and community education and is also a member of the WLN Steering Committee. She was short-listed for the Asian Women Achievement Awards in 2008.

Testimonials:

"It has been great to be involved - I would definitely like to be a mentor so I could share my experience with a mentee and perhaps help them."

Anita Ghidotti

"I found the targeted time spent with my mentor also gave me the opportunity and time to reflect on my strengths and areas for improvement."

Catherine Gadsby
